Voice Cast Comments #2: Mr. Koki Uchiyama (Shunichi)

We will continue delivering comments from the voice actors who played the main characters of Under the Dog. We asked them a few questions at the voice recording session!

This week, we have Mr. Koki Uchiyama, who played the role of Shunichi Nanase.

1. After the voice recording session, what is your impression of Under the Dog?

It’s got a cool premise of a unique near-futuristic world, and I was taken by surprise that there were some graphic depictions. Also, the story for this episode can stand on its own, but its larger picture is left quite vague. In fact, from what I heard from the production staff, there are quite a good number of things left untold and hidden that they hope to unravel one day, such as some setups and backstories [of the characters]. So I feel there is much depth to it than it appears.

2. What do you think of the character, Shunichi Nanase?

It was explained to me that he’s an ordinary boy in high school. In normal school-day scenes, I tried to sound very natural when I spoke, without much exaggeration. Then, he gets involved in a serious event and faces difficult situations. So I repeatedly imagined what kind of reactions a normal teen would have in such a circumstance.

3. Which scene is your favorite or what do you recommend the fans to look out for?

Of course, the action sequences are amazing. During the voice over session, the impact of the animation – even though it was still not yet completed – was so powerful that I wanted to see the finished work as soon as possible. There were also some parts of the story that’s not so obvious from just hearing the lines. When I heard the explanations, they made total sense and I went “Ah-ha!” So these parts are not to be missed, too.

4. Your message to the viewers of Under the Dog?

This is the first time for me to participate in a crowd-funded production, but I’m glad to be part of a project that takes on new challenges. During the recording, I sensed an air of something innovative was about to be born. So I, too, have nothing but high expectations and hopes for the opportunity of the next adaptation to arrive, in whatever format it will be.
